Where the Art of the Gong Began: Noelia in Singapore

Somewhere in Singapore, more than a decade ago, Noelia Madiedo heard the gong for the first time. She could not have known, standing inside that sound, that it would become the center of her life.

But that is how these things tend to happen. You follow a quiet pull to a place you have never been, and it hands you the very thing you were meant to carry.

The call to Asia

Noelia's path began in 2007, on a yoga mat, in Argentina. She practiced and studied for a few years, and then in 2010 she felt a pull she could not quite explain toward Asia. She has said she was drawn to the culture there as if it were part of her own lineage, something old and familiar calling her home.

So she went. She traveled as a seeker and as a photographer, chasing sunrises and sacred places across the continent, and eventually she found herself in Singapore. She was not looking for the gong. The gong was waiting for her.

The instrument that changed everything

It was in Singapore that Noelia first encountered the gong. She has described the sensation as explosive, and says it never left her cellular memory. Her body recognized it before her mind could explain it.

She stayed with it. What began as a single encounter became years of study, of listening, of learning what this ancient instrument could do to a body and a mind. The gong became her teacher, and slowly, her calling. Today she teaches what she calls sound bending, pairing handmade gongs with Paiste planetary gongs, and practitioners travel from all over the world to learn it. Everything NAMO is, every ceremony we hold, every gong on our wall, traces back to that first sound in Singapore.

The lineage you step into

You would be learning from someone who has been in devotion to this instrument for well over a decade. Someone who followed the gong across the world and let it shape her, year after year. The circle closes

Singapore never really let her go, and she never let go of it either.

This June, Noelia was back. On the seventh, at the Tanjong Pagar studio, she taught the Art of the Gong Masterclass in collaboration with Yoga Nation Singapore, where she is a facilitating partner. Five hours, for practitioners who felt called to deepen their relationship with the instrument.

They moved through the history and philosophy of the gong, foundational technique and mallet work, tuning in through pranayama and meditation, movement and rhythm, resonance and pacing, and the thing that cannot be taught quickly: how to hold the field. How to listen. The discipline of returning to the practice, again and again.

As Noelia puts it, sound reveals the way we relate to ourselves, to others, and to the spaces we enter.

She stayed on to share the practice more widely. During Global Wellness Day, she brought NAMO's sound to the Mandarin Oriental Singapore, and to Honey Glow Asia's first Retreat in the City, alongside practitioners working in longevity, nutrition, movement, and reflection.

The student who once stood in a Singapore room hearing the gong for the first time came back to teach it. There is something moving in that, and something instructive too. This craft is not a thing you finish. Noelia is still studying, still returning, still letting the instrument teach her. The gong asks for a lifetime, and she keeps saying yes to it.
